All You Need To Know About Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN)

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) is a Nigerian Professional body whose members are certified as qualified tax practitioners or administrators.

The CITN broke out of The Institute of Chartered Accountant Of Nigeria (ICAN) and was established in Feb 4, 1982 as Association of tax Administration and practitioner and the Federal Government through the enabling Act No. 76 of 1992 made it Chartered.

The chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria was saddled with the responsibilities of determining the standards of knowledge and skill to be attained by persons seeking to become it’s members among other duties.

It was changed to Nigeria institute of Taxation on 21th of February 1982 when it was launched officially. The headquarters of CITN is at Alausa Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. This association was recognised as a company Limited by Guarantee on May 6, 1987.

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria trains and conduct examinations to determine eligibility of prospectus members. Members of CITN include professions such as Accounting and Law as well as other professionals who have acquired the relevant tax experience. The CITN also offers diploma in advanced taxation to members who work in international tax.

CITN has affiliation with the Chartered Institute of Taxation which is based in the United Kingdom, the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners, the West African Union of Tax Institutes and Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN). It is also a member of the International Tax Directors Forum (ITDF), the Association of African Tax Institutes (AATI) and the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF CITN
The CITN have the following aims and objectives:
  • To maintain and regulate as well as raise the standard of taxation practice amongst its members.
  • To promote professional ethics and efficiency in tax administration and practice.
  • To co-ordinate, promote and encourage research for the advancement of taxation in Nigeria.
Registration of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria Membership
Before you can be a student member of this institution, you need to have met the following requirements:
  1. The student must be 18 years or above
  2. He or she must be physically and mentally fit for the task ahead
  3. You must possess a minimum of 1st degree or Higher National Diploma or it equivalent.
To register for student membership, please visit their office and obtain a form which you are required to fill appropriately. Then you are to submit the form alongside a satisfactory evidence of age, name, character and eligibility together with photocopies of of your educational certificates. You would be required to pay the fees which would be communicated to you if your application is successful.
